An Unusual, Elaborate And Most Attractive Blue And Gilt Blade Early U.S. Mounted Artillery Saber Circa 1835 Upgraded For Later Use With An 1840 Brass Hilt.

The massive 33 inch long blade is 1 and 1/2 inches wide at forte. The blade is etched for 2/3rds of its length with foliage in blued panels and bright etching. The right side with a gilt American eagle below a gilt riband with “E Pluribus Unam” above a trophy of arms. The left side with a trophy of arms gilt in a blued panel. Condition of the blade rates excellent with most blue and gilt and minor wear. The forward portion of the blade retains nearly all of its bright original polish.

The brass hilt is exceptionally clean with perfect wire wrap and leather. The hilt stamped 41. The gold brass scabbard is absolutely spectacular. It is engraved throughout its full length with leafy sprays and a truly magnificent, 3 inch long fierce eagle with wings outspread. The hangers are affixed to relief wreaths with star insets.

The scabbard retains 75% original fire gilding. This splendid saber was carried and does have a number of door pinches however the gilding minimizes their appearance.

This is a massive U.S. saber, nearly 40 inches overall and emblematic of an era in which American officer’s demonstrated their status with their swords as male jewelry. Altogether a most impressive saber.
