An Excellent Civil War Issued Second Model Maynard Saddle Ring Percussion Breechloading Carbine Serial Number 23448 Dated 1865.
20 inch round barrel. .50 caliber. One of the classic Civil War Union cavalry carbines, Maynards were issued to the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Here is a really excellent condition fully martially inspected example.
The barrel retains 98% dull military bluing. The action retains 90% original casehardening with some areas of rainbow vivid colors. The top tang exhibits some case colors. The bottom tang is faded. All screws are undamaged and frame screws still retain their bright niter bluing. The lever with faded colors turning brown. The buttplate with blue fading to patina but no corrosion and screws are right niter blue.
Fine walnut buttstock with some raised grain and two razor military inspectors cartouches, one “JM” the other “RM”. Butt with only minor storage marks. Hammer retains 90% bright niter bluing. Nipple is perfect and bore is pristine mint.
This is a superior Maynard and would be difficult to upgrade. For the discerning Civil War carbine collector.
