An Excellent Pair Of Silver Mounted English Turn Off Barrel “Queen Ann” Style Flintlock Sidelock Greatcoat Pistols By John Harman, London 1740-1755, Circa 1740.
6 and 7/8th inch turn off barrels with cannon muzzles signed “John Harman” on breeches. Breeches engraved, Barrel tangs finely engraved. Breeches with London gunmaker’s proofs signed “LONDON”. Sculptured swan neck cocks. Line engraved frames. Finely sculpted frizzens. Plain steel trigger guards. Fine cast and chased silver side plates with monster heads. Elaborate shield shaped thimbpieces. Silver grotesque mask buttcaps of exceptional quality. Highly figured walnut butts with relief shell carving behind barrel tangs.
Condition is excellent as these lovely pistols show almost no wear and all engraving remains crisp. They are patinated but not pitted or worn. The silver mounts are not “rubbed” as is usually the case with mid-18th century silver mounted English flintlock pistols. The walnut butts are crisp. The actions are like new pistols and the bores are excellent.
These fine pistols could be polished bright however we prefer them as they are which is crisp and untouched. Harman is a highly regarded London maker. 12 and 3/8th inches overall. If you have been looking at a pair of “Queen Ann’s” for your collection please consider these. You will be happy you did.
