A Lovely 18th/19th Very Finely Pierced “Sail" Hilt Spanish Main Gauche (Left Hand Dagger).
16 and 7/8th inch long wide pierced main gauche blade with classic clip point, notches to catch the opponent’s blade and thumb rest which reveals a forging fault guaranteeing age and quality. “Sail” guard finely pierced and engraved with addorsed feathered exotic birds amid foliage overseen by a well rendered owl symbolizing the wisdom of this dagger’s original owner. 11 and 3/8th inch wide quillons with 4 ball finials. Copper wire wrapped wood grip with solid iron “Turk’s Heads”. Fine globose iron pommel.
Overall condition is excellent throughout. This is an extremely attractive example of these well known and highly desirable daggers, the piercing is of such a high order that it renders this example as a work of the sword-smith’s art.
