A Rare And Fine Civil War Dated U.S. Model 1850 Presentation Mounted Infantry Saber Inscribed “Presented to Capt Patrick Regan by the St. Patrick’s Society of Oswego Sept 25th 1862”.

A splendid sword redolent of history and the battlefield including most importantly Gettysburg. The King’s head marked blade retailed by “W.H. Horstman & Son” and boldly etched for 2/3rds of its length with trophies of arms, foliage, a bold American eagle and “E. Pluribus Unum” on the right side and trophies of arms on the left amid a large “US”. Gilt brass pierced guard. Wire wrapped fish skin grip.

Beautifully lacquer browned steel scabbard with engraved brass mounts. The shape with large punched engraved “US” and the presentation to Captain Regan within a shield. The sword and scabbard in fine original condition with some original gilding on guard and scabbard mounts. No significant dents. Scabbard with 95% brown. Blade is bright with crisp etching throughout and only the most minor staining and a few spots of old corrosion near the point.

 

History: Patrick Regan was a captain in the 147th New York Infantry Regiment aka the “Owego Regiment” or “Ploughboys”. The regiment was engaged in numerous battles during the Civil War most notably at Gettysburg.
