A Really Good Civil War Breechloading Smith Cavalry Carbine Serial 11718 Matching.

21 and 5/8th inch round barrel. .50 caliber. The Smith carbine was issued to the following Union Cavalry regiments: the 3rd West Virginia, the 7th and 11th Illinois, the 1st Connecticut, the 7th and 11th Pennsylvania, 6th and 9th Ohio and the 1st Massachusetts.

This Smith has terrific fully legible military inspectors cartouches on the buttstock though precisely which regiment it was issued to we cannot say. The barrel retains 95% glossy original blue with an L F R inspector’s stamp on the left flat. The hinge shows 40% glossy blue but has a significant area of fine pitting. The frame and hammer have nearly all the case colors with some fading.

The forearm and buttstock rate excellent with much original finish and only minimal storage marks, The triggerguard and tang show 70% original blue. Barrel band crisp as is the buttplate. The bore is mint perfect and the action is equally minty.

This is a far above average Smith carbine that has pride of ownership for anyone who wants a fine Civil War issued cavalry carbine.
