A Very Fine, Rare, And Unusually Large Georgian Lion Pommel Naval Dirk Circa 1780.
18 inch deeply curved flat plain blade, 1 inch wide at forte. Beautiful gilt brass guard with lion mask decoration. Chain knuckle guard. Gilt brass lion head pommel. Fine reeded bone grip. The hilt and grip in fine condition with some bright gilding remaining. The blade with some staining and small patches of minor pitting expected from use aboard ship.
Remarkably this fine dirk retains its original brass mounted black leather scabbard and all three original mounts, shape, locket, and suspension. Carrying rings with chain (incomplete). Leather in fine condition.
This great dirk from the Age of Fighting Sail was in the collection of renowned collector/dealer in the finest Americana, Peter Tillou, a genuinely distinguished provenance giving this wonderful piece added luster. 22 and 1/2 inches overall out of scabbard.
