An Unusually Fine Quality Continental Zischagge Or Lobster Tail Helmet Circa 1620.
The hemispherical skull of one piece is finely fluted surmounted by a rosette. The interior with marks from a master armorer’s hammer. Original pierced nasal. The brim with pointed brow, rolled edge, and retained by brass rivets. Remarkably, this fine headpiece retains both of its original earflaps. The four lame tail articulated with artistically scalloped lames and decorated with a rosette of brass rivets. The form of this zischagge is very fine.
The condition is extraordinary with much original leather holding the earflaps. The exterior surfaces are smooth steel with no corrosion while the interior shows deep 4 century old patination. Weight of this helmet is 4 pounds 4 ounces.
Do not confuse this extra quality zischagge with the far more common lightweight Cromwellian lobster tail pot helmets. A fine addition to any collection of arms and armour.
