An Extremely Rare And Highly Desirable Medieval North Italian Broadsword Circa 1450 From The Bremner Hogg Jackson Bequest To The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum Of American History, Deaccessioned October 1996.
Tapered 31 inch blade with strong full length diamond section rib. Recurved bronze cross guard with well worn line engraving. The quillon block with stepped ridge conforming to the blade rib. Quillons of flattened section widening at the tips and of recurved “S” configuration.
Black leather and twisted flax wrapped wooden grip. Elegant bronze fluted fishtail pommel. The blade with minor pitting and expected wear and small of the period notches. The grip appears to be original though cracked with minor losses to leather.
The sword appears entirely original and has not been dismounted. Most swords of this period are excavated or river finds as with the Castillion horde. To find an intact Medieval sword of this early period is nearly impossible.
The balance of this sword is so perfect as to astonish anyone fortunate enough to heft it. Swords of this type appear in mid 15th century paintings by Italian masters with archangels wielding similar blades.
