A Civil War Starr Percussion Saddlering Carbine, Serial No. 2307.

.54 caliber, 21" round barrel. One of the scarcer Civil War carbines, the Starr was rated as better than the Sharpes carbine in period Government tests. A number of Starr's were issued for Western service to Union Cavalry Regiments including the 1st Arkansas, 5th Kansas, 11th Missouri, and 24th New York.

A total of 20601 Starr carbines were manufactured; this example with the proper military inspector's markings 'LAB'. The barrel with smooth brown untouched patina. The front barrel band uncleaned after cavalry use and the fore end with attractive hand-worn patina. The lockplate and action with the same untouched patina as the barrel. The breech tang features an interesting handmade period attachment.

The stock also with attractive hand worn patina; one tight crack on the left side behind tang does not detract; period repair to lower part of butt. Uncleaned brass buttplate. Markings are clear and this carbine is mechanically good; the nipple crushed from old use. The bore rates good with distinct lands and grooves.

Overall this Starr Carbine has most attractive patination and was doubtless carried by a Union Cavalrman in the Civil War.
