Japanese Long D-Guard Katana from Russo-Japanese War Period; Blade circa 1550
It is a Type 19, Model of 1886, company grade, lieutenant or captain sword.
The family crest is on the guard backstrap. The16th century blade has a 27 1/2 inch cutting edge length from the tip of kissaki to the munemachi. It has a strong boshi and temper line with a sanbon sugi hamon (three cedars) temper line (probably a Kane Moto school smith).
It is in an excellent state of old polish with a few scratches on the point. The blade is essentially flawless with a couple of small flea bites to the edge on the point. It has a ubu/suriage nakago (tang).
The habaki is silver foil. The hilt has excellent same (sharkskin) with all of the wire wrapping intact in excellent condition. It is missing all of the original layered seppa, replaced with a stack of new ones.
The scabbard has numerous patches of peeled chrome. A very sound quality blade.
