Rare And Well Decorated Scottish Targe (Shield) 18th/19th Century

A Rare And Well Decorated Scottish targe (Shield) 18th/19th Century. 18 inches in diameter properly constructed of wood covered with deer hide. The front of the targe decorated numerous brass tacks in concentric circles emanating from a central boss.

     The rim completely encircled with tacks (a few missing). The brown deer hide showing wear and age. The reverse of the targe covered in deer hide with the hair still on held down with antique iron nails. The enarms missing, the whole showing great age.

     Old inventory numbers T4 present but light with age and use. All Scottish regalia is rare and few among it is scarcer than the most emblematic of all Scottish arms and armour, the targe. This is a fine example of this very rare and seldom offered shield.
