An Extremely Rare And Desirable Lion Head Pommel Basket Hilt Of The Household Cavalry Royal Horseguards Circa 1700 From The Private Collection Of The Baron Loudoun.
29 and 1/2 inch backsword blade with two long fullers, one narrow and the other broad extending through the point. The wide fuller engraved “ANDREA FERRARA” with orb and cross.
The basket hilt superbly worked with shell design and saltires. The shagreen grip bound with twisted steel wire. The hilt attached to the relief chiseled grinning lion pommel. The lion pommel exceptionally well detailed with snarling visage, ears, and mane. The blade is fine polished in the European manner. The grip is excellent. Hilt is finely polished to museum standards. The pommel in fine polished condition as well.
36 and 3/4 inches overall. This is a superb sword and comes with Baron Loudoun’s tag and his red wax seal guaranteeing this wonderful sword’s provenance for the collector fortunate enough to acquire it.
