A Very Rare Gold Damascened Pulowar Hilted Indian Broadsword With Highly Unusual Broad Leaf Shaped Damascus Blade Ex Collection Martin B. Retting Circa 1780.

29 and 3/4 inch long blade swells to 3 and 1/2 inches in front of the forte. Average width is just under 2 inches. Two superbly cut wide fullers in each side of the blade. Heavy gold Damascene at fort depicting two running tigers amid foliage. Damascus pattern is visible through staining but steel is so finely forged that it did not pit.

Classic pulowar hilt is entirely Damascened in gold with foliage and blossoms. Condition of blade is stained, Damascening is nearly 100% bright gold with no real wear. Hilt shows some loss to lovely gold Damascening but still 85% intact. 35 inches overall.

This lovely rarity hung for decades in legendary dealer and collector Martin B. Retting’s study together with other superb Islamic weapons and still bears his inventory label 567. This great sword was purchased from Mr. Retting’s widow, Mary, in the 1980’s and has never been offered for public sale until now. Do not miss this wonderful broadsword as one may not come around for another 30 years.
