A Fine New York Engraved Smith & Wesson 38 Single Action First Model Revolver or "Baby Russian" with Original Pearl Grips.
The nickel plated revolver serial number 6116 features profuse nearly full coverage engraving possibly from the shop of Louis D. Nimschke comprising a Nimschke sunburst around the pivot, a classic Nimschke style checkerboard pattern on the topstrap and barrel lug. The frame with well executed scrolls that continue on the barrel. The fluted cylinder with border engraving and scrolls between the flutes.
Condition rates excellent with most of the original period nickel finish with super sharp engraving and only minor pinpricks. The hammer retains some muted casehardening. The grips are excellent with real “fire” and only one very minor chip to the right panel where it meets the frame.
All markings are sharp and bore is good.
This is a very fine engraved “Baby Russian” the equal of those which have sold at auction for $4000+ hammer. Only made from 1876 to 1877 with a total production of 25,548.
