A Splendid And Very Rare French Elliptical Brass Barrel “Ducksbill” Flintlock Blunderbuss With Snap Bayonet Circa 1785.
14 inch “Spanish” form barrel with majestic 2 and 3/4 inch wide muzzle. Barrel with lovely rings at breech and quadruple rings at muzzle.
The spring bayonet is remarkable as it resembles a dagger with long flutes rather than the usual bayonet. Unsigned bolted convex lock complimented by a swan-neck cock and roller bearing frizzen. Beautifully engraved and shaped steel triggerguard. Sidenails are engraved. Sculptured, finely engraved steel buttplate. Steel ramrod thimbles and steel ramrod with trumpet end.
Highly figured Circassian walnut full stock with high comb and pronounced almost “tiger” striping. Condition of barrel is excellent with lovely unpolished even honey colored brass like a fine untouched Henry rifle frame. Steel parts with uncleaned soft gray patina. The wood is excellent with no cracks and only a few minor marks. The action is excellent and all lock parts are original. 28 and 3/4 inches overall.
Unquestionably one of the most attractive and unusual blunderbusses we have ever offered for sale. Condition and overall quality are evident in every inch of this superb “buss”. The price is firm and offers will be politely refused as we like this one so much we do not care if we sell it. It is paid for and eats very little. Step up on this one and you will be happy you did.
